A 24-year old driver caused a collision on the highway last night, and then proceeded to injure a police officer while resisting arrest.
At approximately 1 am on Thursday morning, a 52-year-old man from Nicosia was involved in a collision with with a car driven by a 24-year old from Limassol on the Nicosia-Limassol highway under conditions currently being investigated.
According to authorities, the 52-year old man’s vehicle was immobilised. The 24-year old however, continued towards Limassol, where he took the first motorway exit and then drove back towards Nicosia.
Members of the Traffic Accident Prevention and Road Safety Awareness followed the vehicle and managed to stop the 24-year-old in Latsia.
While necessary checks were being conducted at the scene, the 24-year-old sped off, injuring a police officer with his open vehicle door. The injured police officer was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where he received first aid and was later released.
Police followed the 24-year old and managed to stop him after the two vehicles collided. During his escape, the 24-year old driver was observed by authorities throwing a small bag which was later found to contain cannabis from his car.
Authorities arrested the young suspect who according to reports had visible signs and symptoms of intoxication and refused to give a breath sample for a preliminary alcohol test. Authorities are currently continuing their investigations.
