President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades arrived on Thursday in Valletta, the capital of Malta, where he will attend the informal European Council that takes place on Friday.
According to an official announcement, the Summit is expected to start in the morning and the EU heads of state or government will address, among other issues, the external dimension of migration, focusing on the central Mediterranean route.
Later on, European leaders are expected to adopt the Declaration of Malta, with references to the issue of immigration. President Anastasiades will also attend a working lunch to discuss the broader EU approach on immigration and exchange views on the latest international developments.
In the afternoon session, Europe`s heads of state or government will prepare for the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, due on March 25, 2017.
Malta holds the six-monthly Presidency of the Council of Europe during the first half of 2017.
