Syllouris: Parliaments have a role in the relationship between citizens and decision-making centres

The parliaments have an important role to play in bridging the gap between citizens and decision-making centres, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris said, speaking at the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), taking place in the Seychelles.

During the last day of the Conference, Syllouris said MPs, as representatives of the people, must establish practices and mechanisms promoting good administration and the participation of citizens.

He added that social networks, websites and new technologies are tools that can be used for better communication and information regarding parliamentary work.

Syllouris referred to practices in Cyprus, and called on his counterparts to intensify their efforts in order to turn weaknesses into opportunities, for change and adaptation to a stronger democratic framework, which will be able to meet the new challenges.

The Final Conclusions include a proposal put forward by Syllouris, regarding the creation of a Commonwealth network for the exchange of parliamentary practices and procedures, which is expected to be promoted for approval.

While in the Seychelles, Syllouris will visit the house Archbishop of Cyprus Makarios III lived in during his exile, and will attend a reception hosted by the British High Commissioner to the Seychelles.
