London urges avoidance of tensions in Cyprus’ EEZ

The UK government has reiterated that it recognizes the Republic of Cyprus’ sovereignty over its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and urged all parties to avoid actions that risk escalating tensions in the region, as Italian energy giant ENI`s drillship SAIPEM 12000 was halted on Saturday by Turkish warships en route to a location within Block 3 of Cyprus’ EEZ.

Responding to a Cyprus News Agency question about the UK’s position on this issue, a Foreign Office spokesperson said on Monday evening: “We recognise the Republic of Cyprus’ sovereign right to its Exclusive Economic Zone and to exploit its natural resources. We urge all parties to avoid any actions that risk escalating tensions in the region or could have a negative impact on the prospects for a settlement.”

“Instead we should look for ways by which the development of hydrocarbons can support the search for a settlement, for the benefit of all Cypriots,” the spokesperson added.
