Cyprus remembers Mari victims 7 years ago! (video)

Wednesday marks the seventh anniversary of Cyprus’ worst ever peacetime military accident – the explosion at Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Zygi and Mari that left 13 dead and some 60 injured.

The July 11, 2011 blast and resulting fire was caused when 98 containers of explosives that had been stored for over two years in the baking sun on the Base, self-detonated.

A video published by the Cyprus Times shows victims families, journalists and chief of the Cyprus Fire Service sharing there memories of that horrifying day which left its mark in Cyprus recent history.

President Nicos Anastasiades attended the memorial service on Wednesday morning at the chapel erected at the naval base.
