President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has arrived at the Presidential Palace embarking on the first official visit to Cyprus by an Egyptian President, as President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has tweeted.
Sisi was welcomed by President Anastasiades at the sound of a band playing the national anthems of both countries. He laid a wreath at the statue of the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios. Then each President introduced the members of his delegation to the other. After that, the two Presidents walked to the staircase at the entrance of the Presidential Palace where a red carpet was laid, shook hands and entered the building.
The two leaders will have a one to one meeting before talks that will include delegations from both countries.
In the context of Sisi`s visit, Cyprus and Egypt will sign Memoranda of Understanding. After their talks this morning Anastasiades and Sisi will bestow medals on each other and will make statements to the media.
In a message on Twitter, President Anastasiades said it is the first official visit of a President of Egypt and a “tangible proof of our determination to upgrade and deepen even further our relations”.
The visit takes place one day ahead of the Trilateral Meeting among Cyprus, Greece and Egypt which will also take place in Cyprus, with the participation of Anastasiades and Sisi, as well as Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
