The presence of members of the Security Council at a new international conference on Cyprus would be useful and Russia is willing to participate, said Russian Ambassador in Nicosia,Stanislav V. Osadchiy.
Speaking in the framework of a visit to Limassol Municipality, Osadchiy said Russia hopes that everything will go well at the next conference which “would be better with the participation of SC members, would be useful and if necessary, we are willing to attend”.
The Russian diplomat said his country wants a solution where “all differences are settled the soonest possible”.
Limassol Mayor Nicos Nicolaides thanked Russia and its people for their long-term support in efforts to the Cyprus problem.
“This support is always on the basis of principles and is always valuable to us”, he added.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, are currently engaged in UN-led talks with an aim to reunify the country under a federal roof.
The two leaders on Wednesday requested the United Nations to prepare, in consultation with the guarantor powers, for the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus at political level in early March.
