Termination of occupation top priority, Spokesman says on UDI anniversary

The priority of President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the government was and remains the termination of the Turkish occupation of the third of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou says, deploring the anniversary of the unilateral declaration of independence and Turkish celebrations.

In a written statement, Prodromou notes that 35 years have passed since the illegal UDI, which was condemned by the international community and declared void by the United Nations, however the Turkish side continues to celebrate the anniversary and promote the pseudostate and the concept of division.

Prodromou assures that the Greek Cypriot side continues its efforts to reach an acceptable and viable solution for the reunification of the island, and expresses hope that Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots will show the necessary political will to resume negotiations for a settlement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
